Our crops of wheat and oats are growing green and tall – the early crops are 18 cm tall. The maize is germinating now and their shoots are thicker. Early in the morning there is often a small droplet of water on the tip of the shoots. I wonder why? Posted on May 29, 2015 by wpsroom7
In Mathematics we have been looking at the difference between 2D and 3 D shapes. We revised some 2D shapes and looked at properties of pentagons, hexagons and octagons. We don’t have to know about tessellations, but we already know that hexagons are a shapes that tessellate – this means they can join together without gaps or overlapping. In mathematics we played a 2 player card game where player 1 tried to make a sum from the 6 card group where the answer was 4. Then Player 2 put one card on the small pile and replaced the cards (probably 2 cards) in the 6 card group ready for a turn. Keep going until all the cards are used. the winner is – the person who has the most cards in their pile or use a calculator to add the sum of your cards. Jokers can be any number up to 10, but count for 10 points at the end. Jacks, Queens and Kings are all removed for this game. Posted on May 29, 2015 by wpsroom7
It’s six days since we planted our seeds. They are watered and in the warm sun. So far, the wheat is germinating first. The maize is taking longer. Posted on May 22, 2015 by wpsroom7
We celebrated Woodend School’s 20th birthday with a visit from the Channel Seven helicopter and Bruce and Amelia from Channel Seven. We waved and watched as it hovered then left from our oval. Wow! Posted on May 22, 2015 by wpsroom7
We made butter from 300ml of cream. We put the cream in a plastic jar, added 4 marbles for stirring, screwed the lid on tight and took turns to shake hard. After about 5 minutes it became hard to shake because the mixture was thick and starting to curdle. Then it became easier to shake as the mixture separated into butter and buttermilk. There was about 100ml of thick buttermilk we poured off at the end of the process. We were left with our smooth yellow butter. It was very interesting to see the changes. We saw these barrels, silos and smoke pot on the farm. Do you know what they are used for? Posted on May 12, 2015 by wpsroom7
What are these farm animals called? Do you know what their babies are called? Posted on May 12, 2015 by wpsroom7
In Science we are learning about the Biological Sciences and this includes learning about animals, their habitats and how farming might change their habitats. Biological Science also includes learning about plants and investigating ways that plants grow best. We visited Urrbrae Farm Trail and decided that farms were places (it could be land or sea), where farmers grow things to use. At Urrbrae we looked at many different sorts of farms on the one site – such as vineyards, piggery, poultry and orchards. Can you sort these farm signs into 2 categories? Here are the News/Sharing topics for the rest of the term. We have also added a list of ideas for free choice topics if you were looking for ideas. Week 3 News/Sharing topic is ‘News in a box or bag.’ The idea is to hide an object (we used a scarf as an example) in the bag/box and during Sharing, talk about some clues that will help the audience guess the answer at the end of the session time.
